Bristol North Swimming Club
About Us
Celebrating Over 100 Years of Swimming Excellence
Founded in 1922, Bristol North Swimming Club has proudly served the community from the heart of North Bristol for over a century. Throughout our rich history, we've supported generations of swimmers on their aquatic journeys—from first splashes to lifelong fitness and competition.
We welcome members of all ages and abilities, with our swim school nurturing confident swimmers from as young as 4 years old. At the other end of the lane, our oldest swimmers are well into their 60s and beyond, proving that swimming truly is a sport for life.
Whether you're just starting out, returning to the pool, or chasing personal bests, there's a place for you at Bristol North. Here, everyone belongs.
Our Vision & Values
Listening, Learning, and Leading Together
In 2023, Bristol North Swimming Club took a fresh look at its values and vision—placing our members at the heart of the conversation. Over several weeks, our committee attended every training session, engaging directly with swimmers, parents, and coaches to gather their ideas, hopes, and perspectives.
This collaborative approach ensured that our club’s guiding principles truly reflect what our members believe Bristol North stands for: Bravery, Nurturing, Strength and Community, working towards success for every swimmer. By listening first, we’ve shaped a vision that belongs to everyone—and continues to evolve with us.
Our Values
BRAVERY
BRAVERY
We believe that bravery is more than just a quality—it’s a way of life. We encourage every swimmer to be courageous, not only in the pool but in their everyday lives.
Bravery shines when swimmers step outside their comfort zones: entering events they’ve never tried, embracing new challenges, and pushing themselves further in training. It’s about showing up, giving your best, and growing stronger with every stroke.
We celebrate this spirit in all our members—from the youngest learners to our seasoned athletes—because at Bristol North, bravery builds confidence, character, and community.NURTURING
NURTURING
We believe every swimmer deserves to be nurtured in a supportive, inclusive environment—one that empowers them to reach their full potential both in and out of the pool.
Nurturing isn’t limited to competitions or training milestones. It’s woven into the fabric of our club culture, where swimmers grow through encouragement, mentorship, and shared experience. Many of our members go on to support others—joining our teaching and coaching teams to inspire the next generation and pass on the values that shaped their own journeys.
Here, development is personal, collective, and lifelong.STRENGTH
STRENGTH
We believe that true strength goes beyond physical ability. As our swimmers progress through the club, they grow not only in skill and stamina, but also in mindset—developing resilience, focus, and confidence through every training session and competition.
We recognise that mental health is just as vital as physical health. That’s why we foster an environment where every individual is supported, encouraged, and empowered to be the strongest version of themselves—inside the pool and beyond it.
Together, we build strength that lasts a lifetime.COMMUNITY
COMMUNITY
Ask anyone at Bristol North to describe the club, and you’ll hear one word time and again: community.
From our youngest swimmers to our seasoned athletes, every member is part of something bigger. Our squads come together for social events, community volunteering, and celebrations that strengthen bonds beyond the pool. It’s this sense of togetherness that makes Bristol North more than just a swimming club—it’s a place to belong.
Our older swimmers play a vital role in this culture, generously volunteering their time to support and mentor younger members. Whether assisting on poolside or offering encouragement during training, they help nurture the next generation and pass on the values that define us.
At Bristol North, we grow together. The BNSC Committee
Meet the Team Behind the Lanes
At Bristol North, our committee is a dedicated team of volunteers who ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the club. They oversee key areas including governance, finance, membership, safeguarding, and event organisation—working hand-in-hand with our coaching staff to create a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment for every swimmer.
Beyond the daily operations, the committee plays a vital role in shaping the club’s future. Through strategic planning and community engagement, they help Bristol North grow, adapt, and thrive—ensuring we remain a cornerstone of swimming in North Bristol for generations to come.

Our Partnerships
Supporting the Whole Swimmer
At Bristol North, we believe in nurturing the whole swimmer—not just their performance in the pool, but their physical and mental wellbeing too. We understand that true progress comes from feeling supported, confident, and cared for.
Our commitment to wellbeing is reflected in the strong partnerships we’ve built with organisations that share our values. These collaborations help our swimmers access the resources, guidance, and opportunities they need to thrive—whether that’s through specialist support, educational workshops, or pathways for personal development.
Together, we create an environment where every swimmer can be their best—inside the pool and beyond.
Physio - Wylie Ball
Wylie is a local physiotherapist and an experienced swimmer himself, having trained within our Masters squads. He now works closely with swimmers in our top four squads (Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum).
The main purpose of physiotherapy screening is to reduce the risk of common swimming-related injuries. Overuse or repetitive microtrauma injuries — particularly in the shoulder, hip, and knee — are frequently seen in swimmers.
The screening protocol is swimming-specific and designed to identify any "at risk" areas for each swimmer. It will also assess lumbo-pelvic stability, highlight potential areas for injury prevention, and provide strategies to improve overall performance. This screening process is based on protocols developed by physiotherapists and sport scientists working with British Swimming and The English Institute of Sport.
Wylie is based in Bristol at Wylie Ball Physiotherapy. If anyone feels the need to seek further physiotherapy advice, then they can get in contact with Wylie at wylieballphysiotherapy@gmail.com.
